The 56th VA joined the Western Region in May 1998 with Jim Wilson as unit commander.
The original 56th VA was formed in 1861 at Camp Lee, Richmond, VA. In 1862 they fought at Ft. Donelson, Tenn. Afterwards, they returned to Virginia and became part of Pickett's Division, Longstreets Corp. They continued to fight in most major battles through out Virginia. They fought at Gettysburg, as part of Garnett's Brigade and later surrendered at Appomatox Court House with only 35 troops left.
