Welcome to the Northwest Territory (NWT)

of the North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA)

First off, we are NOT re-enactors. Some of our members also belong to re-enacting groups but that’s not what we’re about.

The main difference between re-enacting and skirmishing is the fact that in skirmishing, you actually shoot real bullets. (Not at each other!)  This is a rather important distinction don’t you think?

We’re a friendly group enjoying friendly competition. The entire family is welcomed as there are dress competitions for the ladies (the ladies shoot right alongside the men by the way), and the youngsters (8-14) can also compete with bb-guns.

Our average age is somewhere in the 40’s but we have members of all age groups.

We come from all types of backgrounds:  WWII , Korean, Viet Nam, Persian Gulf, and other veterans.

Also we have current active servicemen in all armed forces, members who have never been in the military, business people, scientists, custodians, CEOs and politicians.

Skirmishers compete in timed, team events, where you try to break all of your targets (such as clay pigeons) as fast as possible. It’s quite a challenge to shoot actual or replica Civil War muskets and carbines as rapidly and as accurately as possible!

To be ‘on the line’ during close competition, with clouds of smoke blocking your view, the smell of gunpowder falling on your uniform, and the blasts of shots and your teammates’ shouts in your ears, is  simply - exciting.

How far back does your family’s military traditions go? Having Civil War ancestors is not a requirement although many of us do.

After such an exciting, tiring day of competing with your buddies, one of the most pleasant aspects of this sport is enjoying the comradeship at your campsite.

Our members are young and old, short and tall, obese and anorexic, filthy rich and borderline homeless. What we all enjoy is the challenge of competition, an interest in the Civil War, and pleasant company.

'On the line' at Fort Shenandoah in Winchester, Virginia.  There are over 4,000 members in the N-SSA!

If you’re even just thinking about becoming a part of this sporting world, make an effort to attend one of our shoots. If you’re in the Michigan area, visit the teams listed, otherwise visit our national recruitment site at N-SSA Recruiting. We’ll find a team near you to talk to and arrange to meet.

To see a little more about our organization, please stay and visit our site further. Most importantly, take a long look at our national website at the N-SSA where a GREAT deal more information is available about skirmishing.
